The Royal Irish Academy is pleased to have collaborated with the British Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Learned Society of Wales to publish an explainer that outlines the role that European Structural and Investment Funds play in supporting investment and capacity building in UK research and innovation.

The document outlines how the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) committed 1.39bn euro to UK research and innovation between 2014- 2020. This has an added value as a large amount of the funding is made available to less developed regions. Northern Ireland and Wales benefit to a greater extent from this ERDF funding than their English and Scottish counterparts and the Academies are highlighting the need for the same levels of research and innovation funding to continue post-Brexit.

The document also raises questions regarding the impending Shared Prosperity Fund particularly in relation to the amount of funding that will be available and how it will be allocated.
