The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Royal Irish Academy presented with commemorative medal by Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences recently celebrated its 150th year anniversary.

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences celebrated its 150th jubilee this year with a programme of events in Sofia.  In attendance were, inter alia, the President of the European Research Council, Prof Jean-Pierre Bourguignon; the President of the International Science Council, Prof Daya Reddy; the President of EASAC, Prof Thierry Courvoisier; the vice-president of ALLEA, Prof Graham Caie; the head of the European Science Foundation, Dr Martin Hynes and many other representatives of European Academies.  The Royal Irish Academy was represented by former President Prof Luke Drury MRIA.  All participants were presented with a commemorative medal to mark the occasion and this has been added to the Royal Irish Academy’s collection.
