The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Liam Barry

Professor Liam Barry, international leader in the fields of optical communications and photonic systems was admitted as a Member of the Royal Irish Academy on 24 May 2019.

Professor Barry is currently a professor in the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University. He holds ten patents in the photonics domain, and is co-founder of two successful photonics companies (Southern Photonics and Pilot Photonics). He has attracted the most prestigious conference in the optical communications field to Dublin in 2019.
