The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Energy and Environmental Economist

Niall Farrell is an energy and environmental economist. Niall’s research explores various aspects of energy and environmental policy. He has proposed market and policy mechanisms to efficiently integrate renewable energy technologies. He has explored the equity effects of energy and environmental policy, assessing methods to counteract negative effects on vulnerable households. Niall was awarded the 2020/21 Barrington Prize, an award intended to recognise a promising new researcher in the economic and social sciences in Ireland. He takes an active interest in research outreach, appearing on Prime Time, Morning Ireland and Newstalk radio, among other outlets. Niall hosts the Irish economics podcast “At the Margin”.
