Lunchtime Lecture : ‘Robert Boyle’s Irish character printing type: how the Irish scientist adopted the Irish/Gaelic typeface’ by Dr Dermot McGuinne
Robert Boyle, best known for his scientific research and discovery, is hailed by many as the father of modern chemistry. In his later life, however, he involved himself directly in the production of an Irish character printing-type for use in publishing Irish language devotional texts. This involvement, which has generally been overlooked, resulted in a fascinating typographical journey through time only to end in a state of mystery and confusion.
This free lecture will take place on Wednesday 22 August, 1pm
Exhibition: 'Prodigies of learning: Academy women in the nineteenth century'
Princess Yekaterina Dashkova (1743-1810), Mary Somerville (1780-1872), Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), and Margaret Stokes (1832-1900) were all made Honorary Members of the Royal Irish Academy in recognition of their scholarly achievements in their respective fields. This exhibition celebrates their important contributions to learning and knowledge in the nineteenth century.
Exhibition open during Heritage Week : Monday 20 August - Friday 24 August 10am - 5pm
