Concert Programmes of the Music Association of Ireland, 1950-1984 Editorial Notes
The initial list of criteria comprised of twelve fields; date, concert type, venue, region, name of ensemble, individual performers and instruments, repertoire, availability of programme notes, admission costs, cost of concert programmes, time of concert and review, but it was deemed necessary to omit the last four fields on the basis that the information was incomplete. Further limitations emerged within the selected eight fields and other sources such as Concert reviews from the Irish Times, the Irish Independent and MAI's Counterpoint and Soundpost magazines were consulted in order to create a fully- accessible database for the academic and music enthusiast alike.
It was decided to place the data in a platform in order to generate a range of visualisations; producing a detailed list of the selected concert programmes, an abridged list of concerts, a concert timeline and a map with the concert locations spatialised. The selection of five facets enables the user to search by date, concert type, region, venue and performer.
The project does not provide the user with a comprehensive list of all concerts organised by the MAI, but draws on a wide range of concerts organised by them including, festivals celebrating the lives of Handel, Mozart and Bach, the annual Twentieth Century Music Festival, 'Coming-Out' recitals, country tours, fund-raising concerts for a National Concert Hall, lunchtime concerts and concerts organised for MAI meetings. It does, however, form part of an ongoing project which will in time be expanded and developed.
