The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Patrick Gleeson

Patrick Gleeson is a senior lecturer in archaeology, whose research profile encompasses heritage science, landscape archaeology and remote sensing. His work particularly focuses on the landscape archaeology of cult, rulership and religious change in first-millennium AD Northern Europe, with several active fieldwork programme involving excavation at Ireland's 'royal sites'. He led as PI a heritage science infrastructure award that established the all-island Institute for Heritage and Environmental Science at Queen's University Belfast (2022–). He is a recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2022), the Society for Medieval Archaeology Martyn Jope Prize (2020) and the Four Courts Press/American Society for Irish Medieval Studies Michael Adams Prize (2013).
