The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

John Elder

John Elder taught English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College the Bread Loaf School of English in Vermont before retiring in 2010. His special interests in the classroom were American Nature Writing, Romantic and contemporary poetry of earth, Japan's haiku tradition, and service-learning. He has published widely, including three books (Reading the Mountains of Home, The Frog Run, and Pilgrimage to Vallombrosa) that combine descriptions of the Vermont landscape and discussions of environmental literature with memoir. He is also co-editor of the Norton Book of Nature WritingPicking Up the Flute is his latest project, an account of immersion in traditional Irish music since retirement that also explores connections between Vermont and Ireland and celebrates the achievements of Tim Robinson.
