The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Mary Gilmartin

Mary Gilmartin is a human geographer at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Her work on immigration has been funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, by the Immigrant Council of Ireland, and by the European Union. This work has been published in articles and in Migrations: Ireland in a global world (ed. with White, 2013) and Getting on: From migration to integration; Chinese, Indian, Lithuanian and Nigerian migrants’ experiences in Ireland (with Migge, Feldman and Loyal, 2008). She also publishes more widely on social, cultural, and political geography, including Key concepts in political geography (with Gallaher, Dahlman, Mountz and Shirlow, 2009). She is on the editorial boards of Geographical Journal, ACME, and Social and Cultural Geography.
