Eolas Ginearálta Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge

Is tionscadal taighde é Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge de chuid Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann, agus an cuspóir atá aige ná foclóir stairiúil a chruthú, a thabharfaidh léargas cuimsitheach ar bhrí agus úsáid na Gaeilge le linn na tréimhse c.1600-2000. Tá sé beartaithe ag Rialtas na hÉireann tacú linn an foclóir seo a chur ar fáil, mar chuid dá straitéis chun tacú leis an Ghaeilge agus í a chur chun cinn. Faigheann an tAcadamh maoiniú, dá réir sin, ón Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán.

Tá foireann taighde Fhoclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge mar dhlúthpháirt de chultúr taighde an Acadaimh ina iomláine, agus cuireann a gcuid taighde i láthair ag imeachtaí léannta agus mar fhoilseacháin. Déanann siad forbairt agus soláthar ar ghníomhaíochtaí teagmhála ar son an tionscnaimh féin agus i bpáirt le comhghleacaithe taighde ar fud an Acadaimh. Déanann Bord Bainistíochta idirnáisiúnta maoirseacht ar an tionscnamh, agus bíonn cabhair ar fáil ó Ghrúpaí Oibre saineolacha, ina mbíonn an fhoireann eagarthóireachta lánpháirteach de réir a saineolais speisialta féin. Bítear i dteagmháil le tionscnaimh eile foclóireachta agus teangeolaíochta, in Éirinn féin agus go hidirnáisiúnta, agus bíonn comhoibriú ar siúl idir na foirne chun dúshláin chomónta a shárú nuair is féidir sin.

About the Historical Dictionary of Irish

Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge is a research project of the Royal Irish Academy, tasked with the production of a dictionary of Modern Irish (c1600 - 2000) based on historical principles and drawn from written and oral sources from the period. The production of the historical dictionary for the modern language is a stated policy aim of the Irish Government in respect of its strategy for Irish, and is part-funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge research staff play a full role in the broader Academy, presenting research at conferences and developing and delivering outreach activities both at project level and across the research base of the Academy as a whole. The project is overseen by an international Management Board, and avails of the assistance of expert Working Groups, in which editorial staff participate fully. Close links are maintained with other lexicographical projects, in Ireland and internationally, with collaboration on common challenges ongoing between the respective project teams.
