The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Richard Manton

Engineers Ireland

Richard Manton is Registrar at Engineers Ireland, responsible for registration and regulation for the professional body of 25,000 engineers. He is also Non-Executive Director and Sustainability Chair at Bus Éireann, providing strategic direction and independent oversight of the national bus company.

He holds a BE in Civil Engineering (NUI Galway), an MA in Financial Management (TU Shannon), a PhD in Civil Engineering (NUI Galway), and is a Chartered Engineer. Prior to joining Engineers Ireland, he was a postdoctoral researcher at NUI Galway where his multi-disciplinary research focused on transport engineering, energy, environment and planning. 

Richard has a strong record in engineering policy, standards and regulation. He has represented the profession to Oireachtas committees, World Bank, European Commission and has coordinated revisions of engineering educational and professional standards. He is particularly interested in the contribution of engineering and education to sustainability and climate action.
