We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Stephen Hynes

Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) Food from the Oceans Committee

Dr Stephen Hynes is a senior lecturer in economics and the director of the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Stephen is also the scientific director of the Whitaker Institute of Innovation and Societal Change. Stephen has a strong background in marine economics and applied environmental/natural resource economic research and extensive work experience in econometric modelling. He has previously worked as an environmental economist in the Rural Economy Research Centre, Teagasc. Stephen’s main research interest is in microeconomic behaviour analysis, related to natural resource/environmental policy and his work has been published by a number of the top-ranked journals in the fields of marine, environmental and natural resource economics. Stephen has been a co-author on the Irish Ocean Economy statistical series since its first publication in 2010.
