The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Stephen Mennell is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at University College Dublin. His book All Manners of Food: Eating and Taste in England and France from the Middle Ages to the Present (1985) was awarded the Grand prix international de littérature gastronomique in 1986 (the first English-language recipient), and the Prix Marco Polo in 1988 for the French translation Français et Anglais à Table. His other books include Norbert Elias: Civilization and the Human Self-Image (1989), and The American Civilizing Process (2007). He holds the degrees of Doctor in de Sociale Wetenschappen (Amsterdam) and Doctor of Letters (Cambridge). He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Irish Academy and Academia Europaea. From 1997-2016 he was a member of the board of the Norbert Elias Foundation, Amsterdam, and from 2011-16 he served as President of the International Sociological Association's Working Group 02, Historical and Comparative Sociology, which in 2016 achieved the status of full Research Committee under the title RC 56 Historical Sociology.
