Ireland, Scotland and Wales are steeped in the tradition of education and shared learning. A shared educational heritage remains a strong part of the relationship, and east-west collaboration is a prominent feature of the Irish, Welsh and Scottish academic and research systems.

We believe that co-operation among our three academies can provide a helpful contribution to fostering improved collaboration on our shared interests and we propose to work on a number of shared objectives.

The aims of the Alliance are to:

  • Provide independent expert advice on higher education and research matters and on other shared key issues;
  • Support the evolution of more effective intra-UK and UK–Ireland governance, especially in the post-Brexit context; and
  • Work to ensure that the UK Government and its bodies take proper account of the needs and differing situations of the devolved nations, supporting communication and collaboration between the different levels of government.

The Alliance has written submissions and responses to government initiatives and consultations, e.g. letter to the UK Secretary of State for Business, and the Energy and Industrial Strategy on the implementation of the 2020 UK research and development roadmap. It has conducted roundtables on research and development in the devolved nations and produced an explainer notes on The European structural and investment funds: contribution to UK research and innovation (with the British Academy).
