The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Emma Madigan

Emma Madigan is currently Director of the Policy Planning Unit at the Department of Foreign Affairs. She took up the role in January, 2022. Previously, she has served as Chief of Protocol at the Department as well as Ambassador to the Holy See (2014-2018). During her career with the Department of Foreign Affairs, she has also served as Deputy Director in the Consular Division during which she oversaw Ireland’s network of over 90 Honorary Consuls as well as Deputy Director, Europe within Political Division where she worked on issues relating to the Western Balkans. Prior to joining the Department of Foreign Affairs, she worked at Compaq Computers and subsequently at Citibank in Dublin on their international operations. She is a graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Italian and has a Masters in European Studies from UCD.
