Mary Doyle

Visiting Fellow in Public Policy Long Room Hub, Arts and Humanities, TCD

Following a degree in European Studies at the University of Limerick,  Mary Doyle oined the Irish Civil Service in 1978 where she had an extensive career at senior management level in three Departments -  Taoiseach, Health and Children and Education and Skills.   She was a member of the Management Boards of all three Departments, leading on a range of complex policy issues.   In her final role she had responsibility for Higher and Further Education policy, funding and governance.   During her career she worked to support important institutions and organisations to develop and communicate their research capacity - including through her membership of the National Statistics Board, the National Economic and Social Council and the Board of Science Foundation Ireland.

Since her retirement in 2018, she has  been a Visiting Fellow in Public Policy at the Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Institute in Trinity College where she has been writing in particular about the potential for strengthening the connection between policymaking and research.  This work builds on work undertaken for an Msc. in Public Management in 2001/02 on a “Whole of Government approach to managing cross Departmental challenges”.  She is also an independent consultant on policy and strategy and sits on a number of Boards
