The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Personnel

The programme is overseen by a board of editors: H.B. Clarke (formerly of Department of Medieval History, National University of Ireland, Dublin), Raymond Gillespie (formerly Department of History, Maynooth University), Chair, Michael Potterton (Department of History, Maynooth University), Ruth McManus (School of History and Geography, Dublin City University), Jonathan Wright (Department of History, Maynooth University). Anngret Simms (formerly of Department of Geography, National University of Ireland, Dublin) acts as a consultant editor. Staff employed on the programme in Academy House are: Sarah Gearty (cartographic and managing editor); Jennifer Moore and Frank Cullen (editorial assistants). Rachel Murphy (Department of History, University of Limerick), is the chair of the IHTA Digital Working Group. Periodically researchers are employed on specific atlases. The compilation of material for each atlas is the responsibility of one or more contributors drawn from a variety of disciplines, mainly geography, history and archaeology.
