Knowth megalithic art volume and related resources added to ‘Excavations at Knowth’ collection in the DRI
30 November 2023The megalithic art of the passage tombs at Knowth, County Meath, by George Eogan MRIA and Elizabeth Shee Twohig MRIA, is now available as an online, open access resource in the Digital Repository of Ireland.
This is the seventh volume in the Excavations at Knowth series, dealing with one of the most significant aspects of the Neolithic passage-tomb phase of activity at Knowth. It presents a complete catalogue of the 390 recorded carved stones at Knowth, through descriptions, drawings and photographs. The volume was published in hardcopy and launched at a midsummer event at Knowth in 2022. We are now fulfilling our commitment to add it to the ‘Excavations at Knowth’ resource in the Digital Repository of Ireland, where it joins the other six published volumes.
In addition to the publications, the online resource contains an Archive, to house original excavation reports, site drawings and photographs, and other specialist research that made the published series possible. We have added two more items to the archive: a table recording all the surfaces from Knowth carved with megalithic art, and the report on a survey of the alignment of some of the Knowth satellite tombs undertaken in December 2020 to facilitate preparation of site plans for publication in the megalithic art volume.
The availability of the publications and related documents as an open-access resource means that the knowledge revealed through the excavations and related research will be easily accessible for current and future generations of archaeologists and others to draw on.
