Paul is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography and a Principal Investigator in the Environmental Research Institute at University College Cork. His areas of expertise include using Geographic Information Science (GIS) and spatial ecology, operating within natural, urban, and agricultural systems. He has a particular focus on how technology can support the understanding and prediction of geographic phenomena, such as how biodiversity and ecosystems will respond to climate change. He is involved in a number of EU and nationally funded projects, with interdisciplinarity across academia, industry, and government a key component of his work. He is also the current Vice President of the Irish Organisation of Geographic Information (IRLOGI). Paul has authored several peer-reviewed articles and one book on how GIS can be used to support sustainability.
