The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Heritage Stewardship Fund 2023

The Irish Historic Towns Atlas have been awarded a grant from the Heritage Council’s Heritage Stewardship Fund 2023.

The project is entitled 'Placing our heritage: creating a digital atlas of the city of Cork' and is being led by Sarah Gearty (Cartographic and managing editor, IHTA) and Dr Rachel Murphy (Chair of the IHTA Digital Working Group/University of Limerick). The project is designed to complement the forthcoming Irish Historic Towns Atlas, no. 31 Cork/Corcaigh by Howard B. Clarke and Máire Ní Laoí and will create an open and interactive online digital atlas of Cork, including historical information relating to c. 8,000 sites. Project partners are the Digital Repository of Ireland and Cork City Council.
