The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Associate Professor of Modern Irish UCD

Ríona Nic Congáil is Associate Professor of Modern Irish in University College Dublin. Her research focuses on children’s studies (including history, education and literature), along with women’s history and literature in the Irish language context. She has published many articles and books on these subjects. She is Principal Investigator of a European Research Council Starting Grant which addresses the preservation of minority and regional European languages in the period since 1900. She has received numerous national and international awards relating to her academic research.
