DRI Welcomes The Butter Museum as Member05 May 2023
The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) is delighted to announce that The Butter Museum has joined as our latest member.
The Butter Museum is a unique institution, celebrating one of the great success stories of Ireland, the butter trade. Located in the historic Shandon area of Cork city, the story begins with the central role of dairy culture throughout history and goes on to describe the internationally important Butter Exchange in nineteenth-century Cork, the traditional craft of home butter making, and the modern success of the Kerrygold brand. In the course of this story, the commercial, social, and domestic life of Ireland is recalled.
Dominic Moore, Digital Content Officer at the Butter Museum said:
The Butter Museum is delighted to become a member of the Digital Repository of Ireland. Our creamery butter wrapper collection is both a reminder of a disappearing rural world and a significant slice of mid-20th-century Irish graphic design. Our membership will initially enable the digital preservation and curation of this important ephemera; we look forward to the boundless possibilities of sharing and enrichment that will materialise in the next few years.
DRI Interim Director Lisa Griffith added:
We are delighted to welcome the Butter Museum as a member of DRI and look forward to working with them. Their collections show the important role that Cork City had as a global export centre for butter and so are important for understanding the history of Irish trade and agriculture. They are also important in the context of Ireland’s design history. We look forward to sharing these collections with you as they are added to DRI.
