Celebrating the 1853 Great Industrial Exhibition of Dublin
21 November 2023A collaborative exhibition, plenary session and conference of the Royal Irish Academy, the RDS, and the National Gallery of Ireland taking place across the month of November 2023
The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to announce three events that are being held in celebration of the 1853 Great Industrial Exhibition of Dublin.
Art and Industry: The Role of the RDS in the Organisation of the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition of 1853
The first event is an exhibition exploring the role of the RDS in the preparation and running of this great event. The antiquities collection from the Royal Irish Academy is also highlighted, alongside William Dargan's role in financing and planning the exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public in the RDS Library & Archives from Friday 3 November 2023 to Friday 15 December 2023 during opening hours, and at the RIA Library from Wednesday, 8 November until Thursday, 21 December.
Spectacular gestures’: Great Exhibitions and Great Museums in London and Dublin
The second event is a plenary session and Q&A with Dr Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A museum in London. He will be presenting a public lecture entitled ‘Spectacular gestures’: Great Exhibitions and Great Museums in London and Dublin. The event will take place on Thursday, 23 November at 18:00 in the National Gallery of Ireland, and tickets can be booked here.
Our Great National Temple of Art and Industry
Our third and final event will be 'Our Great National Temple of Art and Industry', a one-day conference focusing on the exhibition's organisation, content and legacy. The conference will take place on Friday, 24 November from 08:30-19:30 in the Royal Irish Academy, and tickets can be booked here.
