We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Imelda Maher is the inaugural Sutherland Chair of European Law. She has worked extensively in European law and governance and in competition law. Currently Dean of UCD Sutherland School of Law, she was President of the Society of Legal Scholars in the UK and Ireland (2016-2017) and was elected honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple Inn of Court, London in 2018. Her most recent monograph (with Dermot Hodson) is the Transformation of EU Treaty-Making (CUP, 2018).
