Cliona Murphy

ALLEA Working Group on Science Education

Dr Cliona Murphy is the Academy’s nominee to the ALLEA Working Group on Science Education.

The ALLEA Working Group on Science Education is engaged in fostering science education and improving its quality through the promotion of new inquiry-based pedagogies and continuing professional development of teachers, as well as in raising awareness amongst policy makers of the critical importance of these issues.

Dr Cliona Murphy was a primary teacher for ten years and has been lecturing in the area of science education at tertiary level for 15years. Currently, her principal work focuses on the research, development and facilitation of pre-service, post-graduate and continuing professional development courses and resources in the area of science education. She has conducted and published research in the area of the Nature of Science within a primary context and in the area of teaching and learning in primary science. Dr Murphy was the Irish co-ordinator and principal professional development facilitator for Ireland in the European Fibonacci Project and is the Irish co-ordinator for the EU Comenius SUSTAIN project.
