The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Fergal J. O'Brien is Chair of Bioengineering & Regenerative Medicine, Head of the Tissue Engineering Research Group in RCSI and is Deputy Director of the Advanced Materials and Bioengineering Research (AMBER Centre). He is a leading innovator of advanced biomaterials for regenerative medicine - training close to 50 PhD students and publishing >200 articles in leading international journals in this space.  He is a co-founder of SurgaColl Technologies, which has translated two technologies for bone and cartilage repair from his lab to the clinic. He is an editorial board member of 5 leading international journals and is a founding editor of Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials. He has received numerous awards including, in 2018, the Silver Medal from Section of Bioengineering of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland, election to Membership of The Royal Irish Academy and a €3million Advanced Grant from the European Research Council.
