Oireachtas Library Treasures series: Maps!

20 April 2020

Sarah Gearty selects and discusses her favourite maps from the Oireachtas Library Treasures series

As part of the Oireacthas Library Treasures series, Sarah Gearty, Cartographic and Managing Editor of the Irish HIstoric Towns Atlas, was asked to select and discuss two of her favourite maps from their collection.

She chose John Speed's 1610 map of Leinster, with an inset of Dublin (above), which is the earliest extant map of the city and the Railway Commissioners Maps from 1836–7 (below), which provided incredible detail of the country at the time.

You can view the video piece where Sarah discusses each map along with images and access to the Oireachtas Library here.

The Oireachtas Exhibition is part of the centenary of the First Dáil and to see more on this and other guest curators, see here.
