DRI Batch Metadata Template Blog Part Three: Exporting Tabular Metadata to XML

07 July 2020

The third blog in the Digital Repository of Ireland's (DRI) series of blog posts on using the DRI Batch Metadata Template delves into using OpenRefine and other tools to convert tabular metadata into a standards-compliant XML Dublin Core format that can be imported into DRI's Repository, or other platforms that support Dublin Core.

The third blog in the DRI's three-part blog series on using the DRI Batch Metadata Template looks at the advantages of using the OpenRefine tool for exploring large data sets with ease. OpenRefine allows you to transform your metadata in ways that would be much more difficult in an application such as Microsoft Excel.

  • Have multiple subject terms lumped together that you need to split out into individual columns?
  • Need to change the format of author names from Firstname Surname to Surname, Firstname?
  • Want to change your date format from US to UK?

All of these tasks, and more, can be done quickly and easily with OpenRefine.
