Ireland’s chief scientific adviser needs to be an independent office and not linked to the post of Director General of Science Foundation Ireland says Mary Canning, President of the Royal Irish Academy.
Drawing together insights and analysis from experts, our goal is to increase understanding by providing independent evidence to inform public debate on the big issues we face as a society. Our activities include workshops to identify current scientific thinking about major national and European policy issues, short timely statements on topical subjects and participation in the European Science Advice Mechanism through our membership of SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies).
The Research for Public Policy seminar series was a joint initiative of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and the Irish Research Council (IRC). We aimed to ignite important conversations about why evidence-based policy matters and ask how to harness the diverse expertise of Ireland's researchers for the common good. We remain committed to strengthening and sustaining relationships between researchers, policymakers, and research funders beyond the series, so that together we can build and implement a highly effective national framework for integrating relevant and cutting-edge research into policy development across Government.
The series consisted of a series of exploratory webinars and concluded with this final report
