An additional listing of resources resulting from new research conducted by Dr Grace O’Keeffe to assist anyone interested in learning more about the Grangegorman area.

Over the past 250 years, Grangegorman has been the site of a workhouse, a hospital and a prison, and now the site is currently being redeveloped as a health and education campus for the HSE, TU Dublin and the local community.

The activities of the three key institutions at Grangegorman: the prison, the workhouse and the significant psychiatric facility that was closed in 2013, have always been the subject of a range of historical and contemporary record and study.

Grangegorman Histories commissioned historian and researcher Dr Grace O’Keeffe to undertake a comprehensive review of all published and unpublished material relating to Grangegorman since 1770. The first iteration of ‘Grangegorman Histories: Resources for further study’ was issued in September 2022. This additional listing of resources results from new research conducted by Dr O’Keeffe and was issued in July 2023. There is an emphasis here on material located outside Ireland and on secondary sources.

As stated previously, the work of collating these resources is an ongoing activity. The project therefore welcomes any suggested additions or corrections for inclusion in future iterations of this document. Please send submissions for consideration to: grangegormanhistories@ggda.ie.

You can download the document or access it here.

Grangegorman Histories is a public history programme of research and shared discovery of the Grangegorman site and surrounding communities. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date with our activities.
