Grangegorman Lives: Sir Robert Henry Woods

Sir Robert Henry Woods (1865 - 1938) was a surgeon and later an MP. Educated at Wesley College and then Trinity College Dublin, Woods obtained the first ever moderatorship in experimental science in 1887. Following his graduation in 1889, Woods travelled to Vienna in order to study ear, nose and throat surgery. Upon his return from Vienna in 1891, Woods took up a position as a laryngologist at the Richmond Hospital. Woods became well known for his skill and thoroughness as a surgeon; removing an entire larynx affected by malignant disease and then training recovering patients to produce intelligible voice. Woods ended his time at the Richmond Hospital in 1905 upon his appointment to Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital.
