The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

New Commemorations Bursary scheme launched

The Commemorations Bursary Scheme, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media has been established to encourage and support new local research and local history studies relating to the commemoration of events associated with the early years of the State as well as other significant historical anniversaries, events and themes.

The bursaries will be awarded to individual researchers across a wide range of themes which recognise the importance of the commemoration of events and a number of grants of between €1,500 and €10,000 will be made annually. Applications for the scheme opened on Thursday, 9 May and the closing date for applications is Friday, 9 August 2024 at 5.00pm.
