President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina held a reception to celebrate Women in Science at Áras an Uachtaráin last Sunday, January 31st.
This date was significant, as it marked St Brigid’s Day, the first day of spring and a celebration of the female patron saint of Ireland.
President Higgins spoke at the event saying:
‘As President of Ireland, it is appropriate and timely that I highlight the achievements of female pioneers in the world of science and of the many eminent and illustrious women represented at this event today’.
Academy members, Catherine Godson (UCD); Mary Kelly (An Bord Pleanala); Celia Holland (TCD) and Jane Grimson (TCD), were invited to attend this event. The four female MRIA were present amongst women at all stages of their career, each having made a significant contribution to the field of scientific research.
