The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Alan Stitt

Alan Stitt, internationally recognised ophthalmology researcher, was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 May 2018.

He is the first McCauley Chair of Experimental Ophthalmology at Queen’s University Belfast. He is internationally recognised for his translationally orientated research in diabetic retinopathy, retinal angiogenesis and vascular remodelling. Professor Stitt's team has identified several key pathogenic mechanisms, targets for drug development and the potential for stem cell therapy for a range of sight-threatening retinal vascular diseases. He holds a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award.
