2021 Archaeology Research Grant and Archaeology Legacy Grants

The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to announce funding for eight projects under the new Archaeology Legacy Grants scheme and the annual Archaeology Research Grants scheme.

The new Archaeology Legacy Grants scheme, which is funded by the National Monuments Service aims to supports post-excavation research for Archaeological Research Excavations which were previously funded by the Royal Irish Academy.

This year the scheme will support:

  • the publication of a monograph on the historic excavations of Rathgall hillfort in Co. Wicklow
  • and post-excavation analysis of the osteoarchaeological assemblage from the site of Knockroe, Co. Kilkenny.

The Archaeology Research Grants scheme which is supported by the RIA, National Monuments Service and Historic Environment Division (N.I.) provides small grants to researchers to focus on an innovative and standalone research question.

This year's grants include:

  • 'Loughnashade and King’s Stables', understanding the depositional sites of the Navan landscape
  • 'Fingerprinting Famine Graves' a LIDAR & UAV derived photogrammetry & multispectral approach.
