Discourse Series speakers announced

The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to announce the speakers for their 2021/22 Discourse Series which will be sponsored by Mason Hayes & Curran LLP.

The Academy’s discourses are the oldest and most renowned series of talks in Ireland. The first discourses were presented in 1786. Historically, Academy discourses were the occasion reserved for the most distinguished academics to first reveal and discuss their work in public. Robert Mallet revealed his pioneering work on earthquakes and William Rowan Hamilton talked about quaternion algebra at Academy Discourses.

The 2021/22 discourse topics and speakers will be

  • 'Darwin’s Afterlives: Recollection and the Making of Biography' by Janet Browne Hon. MRIA, Aramont Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University on 28 September 2021.
  • 'Confessions of a Disappointed Irish Unificationist' by Lord Paul Bew MRIA, Emeritus Professor of Politics, Queen's University Belfast on 25 November 2021.
  • 'Who were they? Conversations between Genetics and Archaeology' discussion with Daniel Bradley MRIA, Dr Lara Cassidy (TCD), Prof Joanna Brück (UCD), Dr Neil Carlin (UCD) and Aidan O’Sullivan MRIA (Chair) on 15 December 2021.
  • Patrick Honohan MRIA Former governor, Central Bank of Ireland in conversation with Frances Ruane MRIA Honorary Professor of Economics, TCD and former Director ESRI (title tbc) on 6 April 2022
  • Future of Higher Education a conversation with Sir Adrian Smith, President of The Royal Society in conversation with Orla Feely MRIA on 28 April 2022.
  • TB, a persistent epidemic (title tbc) by Professor Lalita Ramakrishnan FRS, Professor of immunology and infectious diseases, University of Cambridge on 26 May 2022.
