Brian McGuire

Brian McGuire is Professor of Clinical Psychology at NUI Galway and also works in clinical practice at University Hospital Galway. He holds both a Clinical Psychology licensure and a PhD degree in Psychology. He is a Registered Clinical Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland. He has worked in clinical psychology practice since 1990 and his clinical and research work has spanned medical issues such as chronic pain, diabetes, stroke, cancer, brain injury and intellectual disability. He has an internationally recognized research and publication record and a strong record of research funding, €4.5million as PI (€8.5m in total). His publications include over 160 peer-reviewed publications, many in high-impact journals such as Pain (1st ranked Pain journal), Diabetes Care (2nd ranked Diabetes journal, Impact Factor 19.11), Progress in Neurobiology (Impact Factor 14.6) and Archives of Internal Medicine (now JAMA Internal Medicine Impact Factor 21.87). He was awarded a HRB Research Leader Award in Population Health valued at €1.5m in 2014. He was also awarded the President’s Award for Research Excellence at NUIG in recognition of a sustained record of research excellence and innovation that has been recognized internationally. He is a founding Co-Director of Centre for Pain Research (2007) and Principal Investigator of 7 separate Health Research Board awards, leading a research group of up to 20 people with post-doctoral researchers and a team of research assistants, trainees and students. He is Chair of the Division of Clinical Psychology, Psychological Society of Ireland.
