The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

The 2019 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes

The Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, Italy have issued a call for the 2019 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes.

To continue their pursuit to honour great accomplishments, the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, Italy have issued a call for the 2019 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes – one of the most prestigious activities of their academy. These prizes are of great importance, not only because of the significant remuneration that is awarded, but mainly for the outstanding achievements of the prize recipients.

The 2019 Antonio Feltrinelli Prizes will be awarded in medicine the following fields:

  • One International Prize for Medicine, in the amount of €250,000.00 (gross amount before tax deductions); This prize was awarded in 2004 to Gottfried Schats, in 2009 to Ira H. Pastan, and in 2014 to Christopher Martin Dobson.
  • Four National Prizes reserved to Italian citizens, in the amount of €65,000.00 each (gross amount before tax deductions):
  • Two for Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology;
  • Two for Pathology, Oncology, Immunology, Microbiology

In addition, four National Prizes entitled ‘Antonio Feltrinelli Giovani’ will be awarded in the fields of:

  • Chemistry;
  • Geosciences;
  • Plant Biology;
  • Engineering of complex systems.

These National Prizes, ‘Antonio Feltrinelli Giovani’, in the amount of €50,000.00 each (gross amount before tax deductions), will be awarded to Italian scholars – under the age of 40 on 31st October 2018 – for work that represents a significant and original contribution in the respective prize category.

The Royal Irish Academy is aware that there are many remarkable scholars of Italian Nationality in Ireland so in addition to the international prizes, we are happy to also nominate Italian scholars for the National Prizes.
