Dermot Moran MRIA

Professor Dermot Moran holds the Professorship of Philosophy (Metaphysics & Logic) at University College Dublin. He first received international acclaim for his pioneering work on the ninth-century Irish philosopher John Scottus Eriugena. In recent decades he has become equally acclaimed for his ground-breaking contribution to the understanding of the phenomenological tradition and for his efforts to mediate between the competing traditions of analytic and continental philosophy.

Amongst Professor Moran’s visiting professorships are Northwestern University, Yale University, Murdoch University, and Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Moran is a Founding Editor of The International Journal of Philosophical Studies now in its twentieth year. He is a Member of the Steering Committee of the International Federation of Philosophical Studies, and is President of the Programme Committee and of the Executive Committee organising the 23rd World Congress of Philosophy to be held in Athens in August 2013.

His research projects have won competitive funding from IRCHSS, Australian Research Council and the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.  His book Introduction to Phenomenology, was awarded the Ballard Prize for Phenomenology in 2001, and has been translated into Chinese (twice) and Spanish. It broke new ground in its account of the phenomenological tradition and is now a standard reference work in the field. Professor Dermot Moran has been a member of the Royal Irish Academy since 2003.
