Dr Angela Byrne joined the Dictionary of Irish Biography in March 2024, having previously worked in the Royal Irish Academy as editorial assistant with the Irish Historic Towns Atlas. She is a graduate of NUI Maynooth (Ph.D., 2009) and has held research and lecturing positions at University of Toronto, University of Greenwich, Ulster University and EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. Most recently she was Cultural Officer in the Department of Foreign Affairs. She has published widely and curated exhibitions on the history of travel and exploration, women's history, and the Irish diaspora. Her books include A scientific, antiquarian and picturesque tour: John (Fiott) Lee in Ireland, England and Wales, 1806–7 (2019), Geographies of the Romantic north: travel, science and antiquarianism (2013), and, co-edited with Ragnar Deeney Almqvist and Helena Nolan, All strangers here: 100 years of personal writing from the Irish foreign service (2021). She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a former NUI Travelling Scholar and former Marie Curie Co-Fund postdoctoral fellow.
