The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Senior Lecturer and a Neuroscientist

María Rodríguez Aburto is a biologist and a neuroscientist studying how gut microbes shape the developing brain and how this can help us to understand the complex aetiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. After growing up in Madrid, Spain, where she also did her PhD on inner ear neurobiology, she moved to Frankfurt, Germany, where she studied the communication between neurons and blood vessels in the developing brain. María recently obtained an SFI Pathway Award and an ERC Starting Grant.
