The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Currently vice-chair of the Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations. Former TO, Senator and Minister of State (OPW, Finance and the Arts 2008-11). Member of the Council of State 2004-11. Former diplomat, and special adviser to three Taoisigh and Flanna Fail leaders. NI peace negotiator and back-channel. Co-winner of the 1994 Tipperary Peace Prize. Author of The Legacy of History for making Peace in Ireland (2003). Subject of biography by Kevin Rafter (2002).Former columnist with The Sunday Business Post and The Irish times, currently with The Irish Catholic. Married. 4 daughters, 1 son.
