The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Michael MacDonagh

Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

Michael MacDonagh is Chief Archaeologist in the National Monuments Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. He joined D/CHG from Transport Infrastructure Ireland where he was Senior Archaeologist, having spent four years on secondment with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the North South Ministerial Council Joint Secretariat. A graduate of University College Dublin, Mr MacDonagh joined Transport Infrastructure Ireland in 2001 (then National Roads Authority), following an early career in commercial and public sector archaeological management across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Berlin-Brandenburg. He was Chair of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, the professional body representing archaeologists working in Ireland, from 2015-2017.
