2015 Charlemont Awards Ceremony
16 February 2015On Monday 16th February 2015, 19 recipients of the award attended the ceremony held in Academy House to receive their certificates along with the title ‘Charlemont Scholar’. The 2015 scheme awarded 29 scholars in total, from 9 institutions in Ireland, with a combined fund of c. €50,000.
Funded by the Academy, the Charlemont Grants are designed to act as a career springboard to assist scholars in strengthening their international mobility and developing international collaborative networks. In short, to fund excellent people with excellent ideas.
Since its inception the scheme has funded 155 projects, across the sciences, humanities and social sciences. It has funded visits to over fifty countries, with a total fund disbursed to date of c. €245,000. Aside from the obvious, immediate and intangible benefits, the scheme has also resulted in a large number of longer-term profound impacts for the grantees. Already we can see large numbers of publications, directly linked to the original funded research, beginning to appear in high impact and high quality publication outlets; some have become recognised experts in their fields. Most significantly of all however is the positive ‘bounce’ afforded to grantees in their respective career trajectories by virtue of their awards.
The 2016 Charlemont Grants scheme will open for applications in early autumn.
