Grangegorman Histories launches Grangegorman Lives

Over the coming weeks, this series will share the biographies of over 60 men and women from all walks of life whose lives influenced or were influenced by Grangegorman. The biographies are all sourced from Ireland’s Dictionary of Irish Biography: Ireland’s national biographical dictionary. Devised, researched, written and edited under the auspices of the Royal Irish Academy, its online edition is freely available at www.dib.ie and provides an authoritative reference work of nearly 11,000 lives for scholars of Irish history, society and culture.

The Grangegorman Lives series begins with Francis Johnston (1760/61–1829), architect of the original ‘Richmond Lunatic Asylum’, now the restored TU Dublin Lower House and Billy in the Bowl (fl. 1780s) notorious character associated with the Grangegorman area. Two men whose lifetimes overlapped but with very different impact on the area.

Grangegorman Histories is a public history project of Dublin City Council, Grangegorman Development Agency, HSE, Local Communities, National Archives, Royal Irish Academy and TU Dublin.
