Public lecture by Professor Howard B. Clarke, MRIA, to mark the launch of the book Town and country: perspectives from the Irish Historic Towns Atlas.
This event is now fully booked.
In this lecture, Howard Clarke explores the Dublin Irish Historic Towns Atlas series seeking to find what it can tell us about the people who built and lived in the city and its suburbs from medieval times through to the nineteenth-century. Dr Ruth McManus, Dublin City University, will offer a reply to the lecture. The session will be chaired by Dr Michael Potterton, Maynooth University and chair of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas Editorial Board.
Howard Clarke, MRIA, is Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at University College Dublin. One of Ireland’s foremost scholars of medieval Dublin, he has written extensively on the subject. His long involvement with Royal Irish Academy’s Irish Historic Towns Atlas includes authorship of Dublin, part I, to 1610 (no. 11, 2002) and more recently Cork/Corcaigh (with Máire Ní Laoi, no. 31, forthcoming 2024).
The Irish Historic Towns Atlas is a research programme of the Royal Irish Academy. The Dublin city and suburbs series is ongoing and is published in association with Dublin City Council.
The launch of Town and Country: perspectives from the Irish Historic Towns Atlas will follow the lecture.
