Des McCafferty is a human geographer at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, where he is Head of Geography. He has research interests in urban social geography and in spatial planning and development, and his publications include the books Competitiveness, innovation and regional development in Ireland (ed. with Walsh, 1997) and Local partnerships for social inclusion (with Walsh and Craig, 1998). Current work is focused on aspects of urban regeneration and area-based anti-poverty initiatives, with particular reference to Limerick. He has served as President of the Geographical Society of Ireland, and as Chair of the Irish branch of the Regional Studies Association. He is currently a member of Limerick City Councilâs Strategic Policy Committee for Housing and Social Policy.
