The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Tiernan Henry

Dr Tiernan Henry is a hydrogeologist with more than 25 years of professional experience. He graduated with a degree in natural sciences from TCD in 1986, completed an MSc in Hydrogeology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994, and was awarded a PhD (Hydrogeology) from NUI Galway in 2014.
He joined Earth and Ocean Sciences at NUI Galway in 2003 having worked in groundwater consultancy for a number of years (working mainly in the area of mine drainage and quarry water mananagement). His main areas of research are the occurrence of metals in groundwater, karst aquifer management, bog hydrology, and groundwater resilience.
