Prints by David Rooney
John Edward Redmond (1856–1918), was born in Dublin and reared mostly in Co. Wexford. Elected nationalist MP for New Ross in 1881, he was the leading figure among those who stayed loyal to Parnell in the split of 1890–1. From 1900 he led the re-united Irish Party and after 1906 pressed the Liberal government to introduce a home rule bill, which became law in 1914. His support for Britain’s war effort split Irish nationalism and contributed to his party’s demise. He was horrified by the Easter rising, but called for leniency for those involved.
