The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Nowlan Digitisation Grants open to applications

The Royal Irish Academy is delighted to open applications for the Nowlan Digitisation Grants until Thursday, 11 April 2024.

The Royal Irish Academy is happy to once again open the Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme. This scheme aims to expand the range of digitised historical and archaeological sources available through open and free access to researchers, for private study or education purposes.

Proposals can take two forms:

  1. The digitisation of a historical or archaeological source or sources (including making it searchable and freely available online), or
  2.  The updating of existing digital historical or archaeological resources to enable continued online public access.

The scheme was established several years ago thanks to a generous bequest from Kevin B. Nowlan. Professor Nowlan (1921-2013) was a Dublin-born scholar who taught history at University College Dublin, 1948-1986. He was a founding member of many cultural associations, particularly those focused on architectural preservation. Kevin B. Nowlan was elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1977 and served as Vice-President, 1980 -1983 and 1985 -1989.
